The EU needs to continue fighting against protectionism, both inside the EU and outside its borders. We should promote free trade, not only in the traditional trade in goods, but even more in services, in particular in digital services.

Digital services and more specifically the digital economy will play a greater role in the world trade and the EU must ensure that it will be a leading trading block and exporter in digital services globally.
The Lisbon Treaty enables the EU to be more effective in regards to foreign trade policy. The expanding role of the European Parliament in shaping trade policy in Europe and achieve a balanced approach whilst ensuring that EU‟s ability to react and make trade related decisions is efficient.

The successful conclusion of the Doha Round is imperative for greater liberalisation and integration of world trade. Europe stands to benefit from taking from taking a proactive stand.
